Hyperspectral pan-sharpening: a variational convex constrained formulation to impose parallel level lines, solved with ADMM

In this paper, we address the issue of hyperspectral pan-sharpening, which consists in fusing a (low spatial resolution) hyperspectral image HX and a (high spatial resolution) panchromatic image P to obtain a high spatial resolution hyperspectral image. The problem is addressed under a variational convex constrained formulation. The objective favors high resolution spectral bands with level lines parallel to those of the panchromatic image. This term is balanced with a total variation term as regularizer. Fit-to-P data and fit-to-HX data constraints are effectively considered as mathematical constraints, which depend on the statistics of the data noise measurements. The developed Alternating Direction Method of Multipliers (ADMM) optimization scheme enables us to solve this problem efficiently despite the non differentiabilities and the huge number of unknowns.Comment: 4 pages, detailed version of proceedings of conference IEEE WHISPERS 201

Proton charge radius extraction from muon scattering at MUSE using dispersively improved chiral effective field theory

The MUSE experiment at Paul Scherrer Institute will perform the first measurement of low-energy muon-proton elastic scattering (muon lab momenta 115–210 MeV) with the aim of determining the proton charge radius. We study the prospects for the proton radius extraction using the theoretical framework of dispersively improved chiral effective field theory (DIχEFT). It connects the proton radii with the finite-Q2 behavior of the form factors through complex analyticity and enables the use of data up to Q2 ∼ 0.1 GeV2 for radius extraction. We quantify the sensitivity of the μp cross section to the proton charge radius, the theoretical uncertainty of the cross section predictions, and the size of two-photon exchange corrections. We find that the optimal kinematics for radius extraction at MUSE is at momenta 210 MeV and Q2 ∼ 0.05–0.08 GeV2. We compare the performance of electron and muon scattering in the same kinematics. As a by-product, we obtain explicit predictions for the μp and ep cross sections at MUSE as functions of the assumed value of the proton radius.Agencia Estatal de Investigació

Acceptability – a neglected dimension of access to health care : findings from a study on childhood convulsions in rural Tanzania

ABSTRACT: BACKGROUND: Acceptability is a poorly conceptualized dimension of access to health care. Using a study on childhood convulsion in rural Tanzania, we examined social acceptability from a user perspective. The study design is based on the premise that a match between health providers' and clients' understanding of disease is an important dimension of social acceptability, especially in trans-cultural communication, for example if childhood convulsions are not linked with malaria and local treatment practices are mostly preferred. The study was linked to health interventions with the objective of bridging the gap between local and biomedical understanding of convulsions. METHODS: The study combined classical ethnography with the cultural epidemiology approach using EMIC (Explanatory Model Interview Catalogue) tool. EMIC interviews were conducted in a 2007/08 convulsion study (n = 88) and results were compared with those of an earlier 2004/06 convulsion study (n = 135). Earlier studies on convulsion in the area were also examined to explore longer-term changes in treatment practices. RESULTS: The match between local and biomedical understanding of convulsions was already high in the 2004/06 study. Specific improvements were noted in form of (1) 46% point increase among those who reported use of mosquito nets to prevent convulsion (2) 13% point decrease among caregivers who associated convulsion with 'evil eye and sorcery', 3) 14% point increase in prompt use of health facility and 4)16% point decrease among those who did not use health facility at all. Such changes can be partly attributed to interventions which explicitly aimed at increasing the match between local and biomedical understanding of malaria. Caregivers, mostly mothers, did not seek advice on where to take an ill child. This indicates that treatment at health facility has become socially acceptable for severe febrile with convulsion. CONCLUSION: As an important dimension of access to health care 'social acceptability' seems relevant in studying illnesses that are perceived not to belong to the biomedical field, specifically in trans-cultural societies. Understanding the match between local and biomedical understanding of disease is fundamental to ensure acceptability of health care services, successful control and management of health problems. Our study noted some positive changes in community knowledge and management of convulsion episodes, changes which might be accredited to extensive health education campaigns in the study area. On the other hand it is difficult to make inference out of the findings as a result of small sample size involved. In return, it is clear that well ingrained traditional beliefs can be modified with communication campaigns, provided that this change resonates with the beneficiaries

Compiler-based Software Power Peak Elimination on Smart Card Systems

RF-powered smart cards are widely used in different application areas today. For smart cards not only performance is an important attribute, but also the power consumed by a given application. The power consumed is heavily depending on the software executed on the system. The power profile, especially the power peaks, of an executed application influence the system stability and security. Flattening the power profile can thus increase the stability and security of a system. In this paper we present an optimization system that allows a reduction of power peaks based on a compiler optimization. The optimizations are done on different levels of the compiler. In the backend of the compiler we present new instruction scheduling algorithms. On the intermediate language level we propose the use of iterative compiling for reducing critical peaks

    Bivariate binomial autoregressive models

This paper introduces new classes of bivariate time series models being useful to fit count data time series with a finite range of counts. Motivation comes mainly from the comparison of schemes for monitoring tourism demand, stock data, production and environmental processes. All models are based on the bivariate binomial distribution of Type II. First, a new family of bivariate integer-valued GARCH models is proposed. Then, a new bivariate thinning operation is introduced and explained in detail. The new thinning operation has a number of advantages including the fact that marginally it behaves as the usual binomial thinning operation and also that allows for both positive and negative cross-correlations. Based upon this new thinning operation, a bivariate extension of the binomial autoregressive model of order one is introduced. Basic probabilistic and statistical properties of the model are discussed. Parameter estimation and forecasting are also covered. The performance of these models is illustrated through an empirical application to a set of rainy days time series collected from 2000 up to 2010 in the German cities of Bremen and Cuxhaven.publishe

Background: Diagnosis and management of NEC is based on clinical, radiological, and laboratory findings. Discrimination of pathogens for an improved understanding of NEC in preterm infants and NEC in infants with congenital heart disease has been previously discussed and enables evaluation of further NEC biomarkers. Patients and Methods: Within a study period of 11 years (2008–2019), we identified 107 patients with a diagnosis of NEC at our primary care center. Thirty-six out of 54 patients suffering from NEC in high Bell stages who underwent surgery met inclusion criteria. These patients were classified according to their cardiac status, and analyses of clinical factors influencing NEC were conducted. Additionally, clinical factors associated with a fulminant course of NEC were examined. Univariable and multivariable analyses were performed. Results: The study populations consisted of 12 preterm infants with NEC but without patent ductus arteriosus (PT-NEC), seven preterm infants with NEC and patent ductus arteriosus (PDA-NEC), and 17 infants with NEC and congenital heart disease (CHD-NEC). Blood flow in intestinal vessels was impaired in infants with PDA-NEC and CDH-NEC. Therefore, we used logistic regression to compare PDA-NEC and CDH-NEC infants with PT-NEC infants: positive bacterial culture of intraoperative swabs (p = 0.0199; odds ratio: 21.9) and macroscopic intestinal necrosis (p = 0.0033; odds ratio: 43.5) were observed more frequently in the first group. Furthermore, multiple regression analysis determined the NEC localization (p = 0.0243) as a significant factor correlated with a fulminant course. Compared to a NEC exclusively localized in the colon, there is a 5.8-fold increased risk of a fulminant course when the small intestine is affected and a 42-fold increase of risk when both small intestine and colon were affected. Conclusion: An early diagnosis and timely surgical intervention of NEC, especially in infants with PDA and CDH may be considered to avoid major bowel necrosis (resulting in loss of intestinal tissue) and multiple operations

Influence of the hyperfine structure on plutonium in resonant laser-SNMS

Resonance ionization mass spectrometry is an ultra-sensitive and highly element selective tool for spectroscopy, ionization and detection of atoms and thus enables rare isotope determination. In combination with spatially resolved sputtering of neutrals by an initial ion beam, e.g. within a commercial secondary ion mass spectrometer, an isotope and isobar selective analysis technique with resolution on the micrometer scale for particles and surfaces is realized. Detection of minuscule amounts of specific actinides, e.g. of plutonium, in environmental and technical samples by this ultra-trace analysis technique requires detailed knowledge about the atomic physics of the element. Identification and characterization of the specific resonance ionization scheme applied within the particular geometry of the apparatus in use is needed. An analysis of the dependence of the specifications, specifically regarding the influence of the relative laser beam polarizations is presented here as an aspect, that could have a severe impact on isotope ratio precision and overall efficiency in the resulting ion signal
